STAT3 | D. Stoiber-Sakaguchi
Tuesday, 16. July 2024

The protein STAT3 helps the immune system to recognise leukemic cells. This interaction, which is important for future immunotherapies, is now understood in detail thanks to a study at the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems). The study showed that STAT3 influences the formation of surface structures on leukemic cells that make them vulnerable to the immune system. If these structures are missing, leukemic cells can escape the body's innate immune surveillance. The expression of STAT3 in and the surface structures on leukemic cells could be a potential biomarker for future immunotherapies.

A newly defined threshold for the concentration of the cytokine CXCL13 may improve the diagnosis of neuroborreliosis. The clinical diagnosis of this disease, which is caused by infections from tick bites, is still difficult and often occurs long after infection. CXCL13 now makes it possible to diagnose neuroborreliosis more quickly and start treatment earlier. In the study conducted by the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems), a concentration of CXCL13 in the cerebrospinal fluid of > 271 pg/ml was identified with a very high statistical certainty as the threshold value for a better diagnosis of neuroborreliosis.

Preisträger Arno Bindlechner MSc mit Vertreter:innen der KL, des IMC und Technopol

Eight young researchers were recently honoured at Technopol Krems for their outstanding scientific achievements in the field of life sciences. Among the award winners is Arno Bindlechner MSc, laboratory head at Karl Landsteiner University, who received the "Krems Cooperation Research Award" in the Master's category.

Prof. Dr. Markus Hengstschläger, geneticist at the Medical University of Vienna on the topic of "The future of allergy research - recognizing, understanding, treating".

Pleuramesotheliom

The nuclear protein Ki67 is a meaningful biomarker for tumour aggressiveness and for the success of surgical therapy in pleural mesothelioma, a malignant disease of the pleura. This is the clear and promising result of an international study now published by Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems) in collaboration with Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey. The study compared the survival rates and overall survival of patients with high and low expression of Ki67 in tumour tissue. It was found that low expression was associated with significantly better prognosis and a better response to surgery for those affected.
