This interaction, which is important for future immunotherapies, is now understood in detail thanks to a study at the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems). The study showed that STAT3 influences the formation of surface structures on leukemic cells that make them vulnerable to the immune system. If these structures are missing, leukemic cells can escape the body's innate immune surveillance. The expression of STAT3 in and the surface structures on leukemic cells could be a potential biomarker for future immunotherapies.

A newly defined threshold for the concentration of the cytokine CXCL13 may improve the diagnosis of neuroborreliosis. The clinical diagnosis of this disease, which is caused by infections from tick bites, is still difficult and often occurs long after infection. CXCL13 now makes it possible to diagnose neuroborreliosis more quickly and start treatment earlier. In the study conducted by the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems), a concentration of CXCL13 in the cerebrospinal fluid of > 271 pg/ml was identified with a very high statistical certainty as the threshold value for a better diagnosis of neuroborreliosis.

The nuclear protein Ki67 is a meaningful biomarker for tumour aggressiveness and for the success of surgical therapy in pleural mesothelioma, a malignant disease of the pleura. This is the clear and promising result of an international study now published by Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems) in collaboration with Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey. The study compared the survival rates and overall survival of patients with high and low expression of Ki67 in tumour tissue. It was found that low expression was associated with significantly better prognosis and a better response to surgery for those affected.
On 10 June 2024, the 3rd exhibition in the Innovation Corner Lower Austria in the field of medical technology and life sciences was opened at the Vienna Museum of Technology. On Thursday, 13 June 2024, the KL Choir held its annual summer concert. With a brilliant mix of musical classics from the 1970s to the hits of recent years, the students delighted around 80 guests. The proceeds from the obligatory spritzer stand were once again donated in full to the "Chioma Austrian Hospital" project.
On Tuesday 28 May, KL hosted the event 'Diversity, Equality & Inclusion in Science'. In addition to presenting KL's Equality Plan and Equality Monitoring, Adis Serifović, BA MA, and Steph Grohmann, MSc PhD, from the Ethics and Diversity Hub of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society, spoke about the concept of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) and presented best practice examples. They outlined the historical context and addressed current criticisms of diversity efforts as well as suggestions for improvement.
