SASE, Success and Adverse event Score in Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography

A Novel Grading System

Recent publication

The working group for quality assurance of the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Haematology has examined the quality of results of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in Austrian institutions as part of the project "Benchmarking ERCP". In the publication, which appeared in the journal "BMC Gastroenterology", the authors - among them the physicians of the KL-University Hospital St. Pölten, Dr Andreas Maieron and Dr Emanuel Steiner - present the results of their multicentre analysis on success factors and negative events in the years 2013 to 2016. A total of 10904 cases were evaluated; the visualisation and cannulation of the desired duct as well as the achievement of the therapy goal were rated as success. Negative events were cholangitis, pancreatitis after ERCP, perforation, cardiopulmonary events and bleeding. An evaluation model for ERCP was developed based on these data. The predictive performance was evaluated in 5423 cases in the follow-up years from 2017 - 2018. The results recommend the model as a useful training and planning tool. The paper has been published in open access. Dr Andreas Maieron, Head of the Clinical Division of Internal Medicine 2 at KL University Hospital St. Pölten, is the first author of the study and head of the Quality Assurance Working Group of the Austrian Society of Gastroenterology and Haematology. The work has been published Open Access thanks to funding from KL.
