Management of swallowing disorders in ICU patients

A multinational expert opinion

Recent publication

A German-speaking expert group has proposed best practice management for the diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, based on their expertise and a review of the literature. Particular reference was made to extubated and tracheotomised patients in intensive care units. The introduction of clinical algorithms can contribute to the early identification of dysphagia and appropriate nursing and therapeutic interventions. The expert opinion has been published open access in the Journal of Critical Care. PhDr Michaela Trapl-Grundschober, MAS MSc, a speech therapist at the Division of Neurology at the KL University Hospital in Tulln, was a member of the expert panel.
