CXCL13 as a biomarker in the diagnostics of European lyme Neuroborreliosis

A prospective multicentre study in Austria

Recent publication

Correct and rapid diagnosis of neuroborreliosis is important for prompt therapy, but can be difficult due to the wide spectrum of symptoms. CXCL13 is a B-cell chemokine and a promising biomarker for the definitive diagnosis of neuroborreliosis. To date, there are no clear cut-off values for this relatively new marker. An Austrian multicentre study aimed to determine these levels.  Based on data from 440 patients and controls, the researchers propose a CXCL13 cut-off for the diagnosis of neuroborreliosis. This may be particularly helpful in clinically unclear cases. The study is a collaboration between six neurological departments of Lower Austrian hospitals under the leadership of the Division of Neurology at the KL University Hospital St. Pölten. Dr Christoph Waiß is the first author of the study and conducted it as part of his Research Time-Out (RTO). The RTO is a measure of Forschungsimpulse, a programme of Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences funded by the state of Lower Austria. Thanks to open access funding from the Karl Landsteiner University, the study has been published freely availabe in the "Journal of Central Nervous System Disease".
