A cheek swab that changes the world!

Take part in the stem cell typing campaign at Karl Landsteiner University on 9 October 2024 (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.). A small cheek swab is all it takes to become a potential lifesaver for people suffering from blood cancer.

Five minutes of time and a small cheek swab from his mouth were enough to make KL student Leonhard a lifesaver for a person suffering from blood cancer. "In October 2022, a typing campaign was held at Karl Landsteiner University, where I registered as a stem cell donor together with my university colleagues," the young man explains. "In November 2023, I unexpectedly received the news that I was a potential donor for a leukaemia patient. It was a stroke of luck, considering how small the chance of a third-party donation is." After brief consideration, Leonhard decided to donate his stem cells and give someone the chance of a healthy life. "I believe that every healthy person should be typed," says the KL student. "The few days of effort involved bear no relation to the chance of a healthy life for affected patients."

As partof the stem cell typing campaign, you can not only register as a stem cell donor. In a lecture, you will also learn everything you need to know about the topic: What is blood cancer? What forms of therapy are there? How can stem cells help? How can each of us help? All these questions will be answered by oncologist Dr Josef Singer, senior physician at the Department of Internal Medicine 2 at Krems University Hospital, and the association "Geben für Leben - Leukämiehilfe Österreich".

Association "Geben für Leben - Leukämiehilfe Österreich"

The association "Geben für Leben - Leukämiehilfe Österreich" has been working for over 25 years to encourage people to donate life-saving stem cells. Through its work, over 189,000 people have already been typed and 587 life-saving stem cell donors have been found.

The chances of finding a suitable stem cell donor for a patient outside the family range from 1:500,000 to several million, depending on the DNA type. The association therefore organises typing campaigns at regular intervals to encourage as many people as possible to be typed. At the same time, they collect donations to finance the typing costs of €40 per person.
