The protein STAT3 helps the immune system to recognise leukemic cells. This interaction, which is important for future immunotherapies, is now understood in detail thanks to a study at the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL Krems). The study showed that STAT3 influences the formation of surface structures on leukemic cells that make them vulnerable to the immune system. If these structures are missing, leukemic cells can escape the body's innate immune surveillance. The expression of STAT3 in and the surface structures on leukemic cells could be a potential biomarker for future immunotherapies.

Daily feelings of hunger can be linked to negative emotionality. This is what researchers at the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL) found in a study that was recently published in the renowned scientific journal PLOS ONE. The experience-sampling project with student participation on "hangry", the simultaneous occurrence of feelings of hunger and negative emotions, was conducted together with Anglia Ruskin University, UK. The special feature: an app developed at KL made this research possible in the "field", i.e. in the everyday life of the participants.

D.O.T. research group developed analogue and digital measures to promote mental health in children and young people.
How can children in difficult life situations be supported in their personal development and in their social environment? This central question of mental health care was addressed by the international and interdisciplinary research group within the framework of the project "D.O.T. - The Open Door". At the online final conference at the Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences (KL) at the end of June 2022, the highlights of four years of research work were now presented.

The increasing number of bone fractures in old age is causing more orthopaedic prostheses implanted. The metal screws that are currently used to fix implants are prone to complications. Orthopaedic screws need to be tested for their holding capacity before using them in humans.

After two cancellations due to CoVID-19 and a delay of two years, the 37th annual conference of the ÖGHMP (Austrian Society for Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine) finally took place. Especially for most of the young researchers of the ICC Water and Health (www.waterandhealth.at), to which our research unit "Water Quality and Health" at the KL belongs, it was the first opportunity to present and discuss their results in lectures and posters with a broad scientific audience.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the associated social measures have had a negative impact on the well-being of the population. Studies have shown increased anxiety, depression and stress during the pandemic among the older population, in particular those who had experienced Covid-19 infection in the social circle. Own infection experiences have also been shown to negatively affect mental health. However, questions on the impact of social proximity in combination with infection severity on psychological burden were previously left unanswered.
